1. a) a passage, hall, or chamber immediately between the outer door and the inside of a building; antechamber, entrance hall, or lobby. b) an enclosed or covered area in front of the main entrance of ancient Greek and Roman buildings; forecourt.
2. the enclosed platform and entrance at one or both ends of a railroad passenger car, serving as a passage from one car to another.
3. a cavity or hollow that leads to another (usually larger or more important) cavity. The vestibule of the ear is the central cavity of the inner ear.
–v.t.
1. to replace the open platforms, once universal on railroad trains, by vestibules.
2. to couple (railroad cars).
